Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Orange County

Our Treatment Programs

Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment for First Responders

At Brea Hills Recovery, we understand that substance use rarely exists in isolation. Many individuals struggling with addiction also experience mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma-related disorders. This intersection — known as dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders — requires specialized, integrated treatment to ensure lasting recovery.

Our Orange County Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center is designed with a single mission in mind: to provide comprehensive care for First Responders and other professionals who have dedicated their lives to serving others. In our private, secure, and welcoming environment, we help clients heal physically, mentally, and emotionally, addressing both addiction and the underlying conditions that fuel it.

The Importance of Treatment

Why Dual Diagnosis Care Is Essential

Traditional addiction treatment programs often treat substance use in isolation, neglecting the mental health conditions that contribute to the cycle of addiction. Research shows that co-occurring disorders are common among individuals with substance use disorders.

Ignoring mental health in addiction treatment often leads to relapse. By treating both disorders simultaneously and holistically, our dual diagnosis program addresses the root causes of addiction, increasing the likelihood of sustained recovery.

For First Responders, the risk is even higher due to:

  • Exposure to repeated trauma: Emergency personnel regularly witness life-threatening events, accidents, and loss. Untreated PTSD can drive substance use as a form of coping.
  • High-stress work environments: Long shifts, split-second decision-making, and emotional strain can contribute to anxiety, depression, and burnout.
  • Cultural barriers to seeking help: Stigma around mental health in emergency services may delay intervention until substance use becomes a serious concern.

Our Treatment Programs

Specialized, Trauma-Informed Care for First Responders

First Responders face unique challenges. At Brea Hills Recovery, our clinical team specializes in treating dual diagnosis in those who serve our communities, offering trauma-informed, evidence-based care tailored to the high-stress, high-responsibility environments they navigate daily.

Our approach includes:

  • Individualized assessment and treatment planning: Every client undergoes a thorough evaluation to identify both mental health and substance use needs.
  • Integrated therapy: Substance use and mental health disorders are treated together, not separately, ensuring a holistic and cohesive approach.
  • Trauma-focused therapy: EMDR, CBT, and other modalities address PTSD, past trauma, and work-related stress.
  • Medication management: Our team carefully monitors and manages medications to address psychiatric symptoms safely and effectively alongside detox and addiction care.

Our program is designed to address the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — creating a strong foundation for long-term wellness.

Our Treatment Programs

Integrated Therapy for Co-Occurring Disorders

Our dual diagnosis treatment program relies on evidence-based, trauma-informed therapies designed to treat the interplay of mental health and substance use.

This integrated approach ensures that clients heal both physically and psychologically, rather than only managing symptoms in isolation.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps clients identify and reframe negative thought patterns that contribute to both addiction and mental health symptoms.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Supports emotional regulation and coping skills for stress, anxiety, and trauma.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Targets PTSD and trauma-related symptoms often underlying substance use.
  • Motivational Interviewing: Encourages self-awareness, goal-setting, and long-term engagement in recovery.
  • Group Therapy for First Responders: Provides peer support and fosters camaraderie, accountability, and understanding among clients with similar life experiences.

How we are unique

Addressing the Unique Challenges of First Responders

The men and women who dedicate their lives to public service face stressors that differ from the general population, and our program reflects this understanding.

  • Trauma and PTSD: First Responders frequently experience events that can lead to post-traumatic stress. Our team specializes in recognizing, treating, and supporting clients through these challenges.
  • Shift Work and Sleep Disruption: Irregular schedules and night shifts can exacerbate mental health symptoms. Our program incorporates sleep hygiene, mindfulness, and coping strategies to restore balance.
  • Workplace Culture: Many First Responders feel pressure to remain stoic. Our supportive environment encourages openness and vulnerability, helping clients safely address both mental health and substance use concerns.

By acknowledging and addressing the unique realities of service-oriented professions, Brea Hills Recovery creates an environment where First Responders feel understood, safe, and supported.

Nutrition, Wellness, and Holistic Care

Healing from dual diagnosis requires more than therapy — it requires restoring the body and mind. At Brea Hills Recovery, we emphasize holistic wellness as part of our treatment:

  • Nutritious, balanced meals designed to replenish energy, restore brain health, and support physical recovery.
  • Fitness and outdoor activities to reduce stress, boost mood, and strengthen physical health.
  • Mindfulness and meditation practices to improve emotional regulation and reduce anxiety.
  • Recreational outings like fishing, snowboarding, hiking, and beach days, designed to foster connection and relaxation.

This combination of clinical therapy, nutrition, and holistic wellness ensures clients heal on all levels, not just symptomatically.

Our Approach

Supporting the Practical Side of Recovery

Brea Hills Recovery also handles the practical challenges that often accompany treatment for First Responders:

  • FMLA paperwork and coordination with employers
  • Insurance verification and support, including plans to become in-network with Anthem and Kaiser
  • Scheduling support to accommodate professional obligations

By managing these logistics, we remove barriers that could prevent First Responders from entering or completing treatment, allowing clients to focus entirely on healing.
